About FLEx XML Viewer

FLEx XML Viewer is a client-side web app for viewing and exploring FieldWorks (FLEx) XML exports in a structured, readable format. This app is a part of the Field Linguistics Extension Tools collection.

Privacy: All conversions happen locally in your browser — your XML and language data never leave your device. There are no uploads or analytics. Preferences (like language order or view options) are stored only in your browser’s local storage. Using “Open in new window” or “Save as HTML” creates a local snapshot you can choose to save or share.

This viewer supports the following FieldWorks XML export types:

• Lists — displays hierarchical <list> structures as collapsible nested lists.
• Translated Lists — handles multilingual <AUni>-based lists with language ordering and visibility controls.
• Phonology — renders natural classes, phoneme inventories, and cross-references in human-readable tables.
• Wordforms — displays lexical items and analyses in expandable cards or sortable tables.
• Generic XML — provides a recursive tree view for any other well-formed XML data.

For Discourse Charts (Text Charts) with advanced transformation and export features, use the specialized Discourse Analysis Tool.

This app does not process LIFT or FLExText exports — those should be opened directly in FLEx. XLingPaper XML exports can open with XLingPpaer. And Word XML files should be opened in Microsoft Word.
